At the completion of this subject the student is able

  • To perform as a member of a musical ensemble and to prepare a musical performance
  • To collaborate verbally and socially in a musical ensemble
  • To reach a uniform musical performing style and expression

During this course the following learning outcomes of the master in Music are addressed: 1.1,2.2, 2.3, 3.1.

This course consists of the productions which are indicated for your specific specialization and instrument in the document ‘implementation  productions’ which is published on Toledo under the community ‘production office’.

The following subjects are addressed:

  • Mastering the important musical parameters in a musical ensemble: intonation, phrasing, style, timbre, timing
  • Efficient rehearsing methods
  • Methodology of rehearsing in group

For specialization Instrument/chant,  master in education and direction:

The planning and information (scores, conductors, soloists) of all productions are published in the community ‘production office’) on Toledo.

For specialization Jazz, composition (lab):

The planning is communicated by the specific coordinator of  the Jazz- and Lab ensembles.

All of the course material will be made available to the student. Exceptionally, a score might have to be purchased by the student.

The lessons consist of full group or sectional rehearsals and, potentially, (public) performances.

Students are expected to contribute actively during the lessons.

Students are expected to prepare each lesson by studying their individual scores, improvisational-workout or improvisation.

The evaluation follows the pass/fail principal, no score will be given.

The evaluation criteria for passing this course are the following:

  • presence (1 illegitimate absence or absence which is announced too late automatically results in a fail for this course)
  • preparation of – and collaboration during the rehearsals/concerts

Guidelines for absence during LUCA productions/ensembles

Absence is only justified under the following conditions:

1° DISEASE

- Report illness before 9 a.m. by email to the production office productiebureau.muziek@luca-arts.be  and send your medical certificate via this form within the following 72 hours.

2° WORKING STUDENT

- You have the official status of working student.

- Any reduced participation in the productions should be discussed with the ombudsperson at the start of the academic year and is only final after confirmation by email.

3° OCCASIONAL EXEMPTIONS

- Request for occasional exemption due to mandatory, curricular activities in an on-campus course is only possible at the start of the relevant semester and after positive advice from the ombudsperson.

- Exemption due to participation after successful audition for orchestra academies must be requested before the start of the academic year via the coordinator of the course.

Given that OPO ensemble is evaluated on the basis of attendance, illegitimate absence inevitably leads to a fail for the course.

No 2nd examination opportunity.

second examination opportunity is only possible after full participation in the evaluation activities of the first examination session in the first or second exam period. This means that the second examination session is only possible after full participation in the ensemble productions. This means that the second examination session is not possible as a postponed examination, unless approved by the exam ombuds.

In case a second examination session is offered with modified examination modalities, the student will be informed in writing.
