Music Analysis (B-LUCA-L42893)

Aims
Students understand at a glance the functions of the chords as well as the tonalities and modulations of a tonal composition written until the first half of the nineteenth century. After reflection, they also understand the function of the chords as well as the tonalities and modulations of a tonal composition written from the second half of the nineteenth century.
Students can describe the form of a tonal composition and the development of its motifs.
Students understand what make a composition 'work' and are able to concisely explain the most salient aspects of it.
Students know the implications analytical insights can have for a performance and are able to apply the gathered knowledge while practising their instrument.
Previous knowledge
Students possess basic knowledge of music theory. They can very quickly recognise intervals and find the root note of a chord in a tonal composition. They can distinguish non-chord tones from tones belonging to a chord and they know all different types of non-chord tones.
Students have enough sight-reading skills for instantenously understand all pitches written in a double pentagram score (treble and bass key).

The topic 'harmonic analysis' includes all knowledge necessary for correctly analysing the harmony of a tonal composition.
The topic 'analysis of form' includes on the one hand an overview of the codifications of the different forms made by music theorists, on the other an explanation of the actual structures composers have given to their work.
The topic 'strategies of music' includes an overview of the universal principles of tonal music and it draws attention on those aspects of a composition which make it 'work'.
The topic 'application of analytical insights in performance' proposes ways of creatively applying analytical insights when practising a music instrument.
