Two times per academic year, the ensemble will work out a 30 minute repertoire. The teacher chooses the repertoire, usually in consultation with the students. Important criteria are: knowing the themes, the accompaniments and the improvisations, playing as an ensemble, feeling for dynamics, timbre and colour, place within the ensemble, identification with the style period, knowledge of the composer. The repertoire can be comprised of standard jazz repertoire or original works.

Big band repertoire will be decided upon by teacher Frank Vaganée. The repertoire of the themed combos will be decided upon by the teachers involved. Each one of those combos will work with one theme: a style, a composer, a time period or something similar.

Books, transcriptions (self-made and existing), compositions.

For big band: sheet music and transcriptions, supplied by the teacher.

Ensemble: the teacher gives new compositions which the students will study, pursuing interplay and interaction in the ensemble. The ensemble will practice on how to play together, paying attention to timbre, sound, dynamics, build-up etc. Students will often be given the task to prepare new works or study the given works.

Big band: the student prepares the repertoire, prior to the start of the project. The sheet music will be given to the student before the start of the rehearsals. The student attends all rehearsals and has an active contribution to the creation of the concert repertoire. The student is present during the the concert, as agreed upon during the rehearsals.

Guidelines in case of absence during LUCA productions/ensembles

Please keep in mind that, in case of planned, legitimate absence on an ensemble rehearsal and/or concert, the Production Bureau must always be informed in advance.

A legitimate absence is only possible according to one of the following options. If you qualify for this, please report this and follow the appropriate procedure:

1) You have an official status as a working student . However, you can only be absent according to a schedule agreed with by the Production Office and the Study career consultant.

2) Illness: report to the Production Office and upload your doctor's note via Proform to justify your absence.

3) You have a Top Arts status or a unique top-level cultural opportunity. This must always be discussed with and approved by Frank Vaganée in advance.

4) Curriculum obligations in another graduation subject (after approval by the departmental coordinator) and if timely notified to the Production office.

Given that OPO (Thematic)ensemble is evaluated on the basis of attendance, illegitimate absence inevitably leads to a fail for the course.

No 2nd examination opportunity.
