At the end of the academic year, the student has to master the arranging techniques that allow him to write an arrangement based on an existing composition for a traditional jazz big band (4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxophones, piano, double bass and drums).

The student must have passed ‘1MA Atelier Jazz composition & arrangement’ in the previous academic year.

The student studies all arranging techniques including applied exercises leading to a final piece. This thesis is an arrangement for the traditional big band line - up. 

The study material consists of the study books

  • 'Jazz arranging techniques - from quartet to big band' by Gary Lindsay
  • Instrumental Jazz Arranging - A comprehensive and practical guide by Mike Tomaro and John Wilson
  • Inside the score by Rayburn Wright

and listening material by means of CDs and audio files.

listening to musical examples, making exercises that can lead to a full arrangement.

The student can only participate in this practical exam if he/she attended 80% of the contact moments (registered on the attendance list).

The student receives a final mark based on the end result of the final arrangement, the cooperation during the contact moments and the process completed with regard to the assignments.

For the re-examination, a deadline will be communicated within which the student must submit the final arrangement and the assignments.
