The course provides an overview of developments and movements in animated film, with a focus on America, Europe and the former Soviet Union. Through film screenings and readings, it handles the historical, political and personal background in which films come to being. Different production contexts and their influence on content and form get discussed, ranging from commercial studio systems to government supported author films.

References, texts and documents related to the works viewed in class will be shared with the students through Toledo.

The course is taught in Dutch.

Course materials also include films and texts in English.

    • Lectures focusing on the theory and history of animated film.
    • Film screenings: based on the screening of short films, fragments, documentaries and interviews with makers, history, theory and working methods are illustrated and repertoire knowledge is built.
    • Reading and written assignments.
