At the end of the academic year, the student has to master all basic arranging techniques that allow him to write an arrangement based on an existing composition for a traditional jazz octet line-up (trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone and baritone saxophone, piano, double bass and drums).

This course is open to students of main subject Jazz and Composition.

If the student does not belong to one of the above-mentioned categories, exceptional admission can be requested by contacting the responsible coordinator of the course, by email. After written approval, the student can include this course in the ISP.

The student studies all arranging techniques including applied exercises leading to a final piece. This thesis is an arrangement for the traditional octet line-up (trumpet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone and baritone saxophone, piano, double bass and drums). This arrangement is based on a composition from the 'All American Song Book'.

The study material consists of study books

  • 'Jazz arranging techniques - from quartet to big band' by Gary Lindsay
  • Instrumental Jazz Arranging - A comprehensive and practical guide by Mike Tomaro and John Wilson
  • Inside the score by Rayburn Wright

and listening material by means of CDs and audio files.

Listening to musical examples, making exercises and working out an arrangement

Students can participate in this practical exam only if they have attended 80% of the contact moments (recorded on the attendance list).

The student obtains a final mark based on the end result of the final arrangement, the cooperation during the contact moments and the completed process regarding the weekly assignments.

For the re-examination, a deadline will be communicated within which the student must submit the final arrangement and the assignments.
