We are living in a post digital age. Digital technology is now so deeply embedded in our daily lives that it becomes almost invisible and taken for granted. Craft and tangible or physical experiences that are typically considered to be non-digital, are not juxtaposed anymore, yet considered part of this era.
In this course, students will gain an insight into the fundamentals of Human Computer Interaction and how they relate to contemporary and future artistic and design challenges.

Here, we acknowledge the role of storytellers and designers that envisioned how users would engage with new, not-yet-existing technology. For instance, in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, set designers and script writers created what we now know as computer tablets. They inspired computer scientists with how technology should behave and how humans would interact.
The goal of this course is to 1) develop a critical attitude towards contemporary technological developments, 2) recognize, and 3) apply research methods to evaluate designs.

Through these objectives, this course unit contributes to the following course-specific learning outcomes: 1,2, 3, 4, 5

On a theoretical level, the three waves of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) are addressed with a focus on the current and future role of HCI, such as transcending the human position in design and looking at the role of animals, nature, robots, AI, etc. Particular attention will be given to the role of the designer in technological evolutions. Based on a number of relevant experiments, we examine how to translate the foundations of Human Computer Interaction into a mediatized space and how we can enable the visitor/user to interact with technology in the world today.
