Gaining insight into the different ways in which filmmakers, composers, and sound designers handle the auditory layer in a film. By studying audiovisual compositions where sound and/or music play an exceptional role, the student gains an understanding of concepts driven by music and/or sound. The student can reflect on film from an auditory perspective.

The student

- is capable of reflecting on and judging film and audiovisual art within a broad social, cultural, and artistic context: the student can analyze the sound concept of other filmmakers and place this work within a wider context.

- can open a new perspective to view the visual layer through a sound concept or analysis.

- can independently develop or analyze a sound concept and apply these insights to their own work.

- is able to analyze a piece of music in relation to a film fragment (within a practical assignment).

This course aims at achieveing the following learning results and goals:

VD1,  LR1, LR2, LR4, LR5 en LR6

We expect the student to have an open attitude to sound and listening and to be able to critically analyse texts.

The course delves into how sound and music can function in an audiovisual composition. By analyzing several sound concepts from filmmakers and sound designers and placing them in their cinematic context, the various possibilities are discussed and analyzed. The influence and structure of music and sound in different audiovisual media are compared: documentary, fiction film, animated film, installation, etc.

Special attention is also given to the twilight zone between sound and music and the theoretical frameworks of composition techniques that start from recorded or synthetic sound (soundscape, field recording, soundwalks, and musique concrète). We listen to and analyze Cage, Xenakis, and Feldman in the context of 'Inside' by Vasilis Katsoupis, and examine how the music of this film transforms these influences into a film score.

A wide range of theoretical concepts such as those of Michel Chion, Pierre Schaeffer, and David Sonnenschein are covered. This serves as the foundation for the student's own sound concept.

We study and analyze 'Cleo' by Eva Cools. How are sound and music written in the script?

Texts made available on Toledo

Classes are given in English, unless all students are Dutch-speaking.

This is a theory course, but certain aspects of the theory will be investigated with practical assignments.
