What is film? Or rather, what was film? Today, the answer to that question may lie in a complex approach to the moving image. Film theoretical, art historical, cultural sociological and political-economic “readings” interlock to understand how the cinematic viewing experience (“the cinema”) differs from television or interactive media use (video, DVD, computer, museum). Thematic film sequences allow us to talk about meaning-making and meaning-making in narrative cinema, experimental film practice and the documentary image.

Lesson notes to be created by the student.

Integral films and film clips shown in class (most of which can be consulted in the school library).

Lecture notes.

Materials are also shared through Toledo.

Classes are taught in English. Students are expected to be able to independently read professional literature in English. Some visual clips have only English or are in English. students are expected to be able to read those as well. A good passive knowledge of English is therefore required.
