A collaborative and expansive cultural initiative has been developed, fostering a meaningful partnership between Art, Design and Architecture colleges situated in both Belgium and Indonesia.

Climate change and how communities respond is the main narrative for this project. We aim to facilitate an artistic and design-driven exchange of perspectives, bringing together diverse creative professionals to collectively explore and transform cultural narratives.

Visual arts, storytelling and scenography bridging cultural borders.

By forging connections between two nations (Indonesia and Belgium), this inclusive project seeks to transcend geographical boundaries and foster a cross-cultural dialogue that goes beyond traditional academics. Participants are encouraged to delve into the complexities of climate change, unravelling its multifaceted implications on society, the environment, and the broader cultural fabric. Moreover, the collaborative nature of this initiative extends beyond the physical realms of artistic and architectural exploration. It envisions an interconnected community of thinkers and creators, fostering long-lasting relationships that extend beyond the immediate scope of the project.

The theme “The impact of climate change through generations’

Climate change is inseparable from the multiple ecological, social, and economic crises of an interconnected world that is spiralling out of control.

The source of these troubles cannot be reduced to a single cause, even one so all-encompassing as human usurpation of natural processes, since the Anthropocene itself cannot be understood apart from the economic order of capitalist extractivism driven by petroculture, the pernicious influence of the military-industrial complex and the crimes and long-lasting consequences of slavery and colonialism in unleashing modern forms of exploitation and cultivating the disconnect from nature.

Artists have uncovered a multitude of ways in which humans are interconnected with the natural order, from exploring what is shared with animals and plants, to shattering the myth of individuality through understanding organisms as sites of microbial kinship and cooperation. This has been taken even further to detail how the building blocks of human bodies are made up of the same chemical elements as mountains and oceans.

The response to the planetary dimensions of climate change requires not a one-sided or solely technocratic approach, but a systematic change in orientation and attitudes to the natural world by transforming behaviours and political priorities to achieve climate justice for all terrestrials.

For the development of his/her/their trajectory, the student can count on substantive and practical support from the teachers involved.

We work locally and online, decentralised, to exchange views on a common challenge, the impact of climate change through generations.

We produce art works, joint workshops, cross-cultural talks, exhibitions (virtual and real) and a publication.

In mixed pairs and in international groups we focus on exchanging stories, interpretations, and perspectives. Each having their own imagery, we listen for interpretations. Globally we share and mobilise knowledge by analysing biases, prejudices, we learn to look, we learn to communicate.

If students who are not Dutch speaking are present, the discussions will take place in English. However, students have the right to express themselves in Dutch.

The workflow focuses on a specific method: RSVP; We translated it to the phases ; resource, concept, create and performance.

Joint Workshops (Belgium & Indonesia), focusing on:

resource ( mapping, angles of subject, modes of listening)  + inviting lectors from ITB to contribute and experience

concept ( objective, envisioning design, storytelling)

create ( community based design, create exhibition)

performance ( exhibitions, public, ..) We travel and invite lectors from ITB to reflect on the outcomes and how to disseminate this project into further collaboration, but also into a traveling exhibition and publication.

Online Presentations: Showcase works by artists from both countries.

Cross-Cultural Lectures: Scholars and artists discuss art, focusing on influences, symbolism, and creative processes. By employing various formats, this program fosters cross-cultural understanding, artistic collaboration, and appreciation of each other's cultural heritage.

Self-study and autonomous work; with discussion of work with teachers at regular intervals. In each country we work with a group of students (audio -visual arts, visual arts, photography, interior design and architecture) meaning we are working interdisciplinary and interculturally, both local and global. We make teams with students who have different cultural backgrounds.

We learn conversation techniques; we determine how you allow others into your own frame of reference. In controversy or in a classic debate, we are only concerned with defending our own position. We hardly listen at all and thus ignore the story that the other person has to tell us. We learn modes of listening.

Evaluatieactiviteiten

(B-LUCA-K75179)

Type : Permanente evaluatie zonder examen tijdens de examenperiode
Evaluatievorm : Presentatie, Procesevaluatie
Vraagvormen : Open vragen
Leermateriaal : Cursusmateriaal, Computer

ExamenmomentBeoordelingsschaal
TOTAALGeslaagd / Niet geslaagd

Process Evaluation: 40 %

Participation rate: 20%

Presentation of personal work: 40%

The practical exam contains an integrated and complete presentation, the student presents his work during the exhibitions and uploads a digital presentation of the work.

The process evaluation monitors the learning process by systematically gathering information about its progress through assessment in four crucial workshops. At these times, it is assessed whether and to what extent the interim objectives have been achieved. Reasoning and method are also taken into account during the process evaluation.

By participation rate we mean cooperation during contact moments. This ranges from actively listening, asking and answering questions, giving a presentation to fellow students, actively participating in peer feedback, co-organizing joint learning activities to carrying out an assignment with commitment and precision.

In case of a failure, the student should resubmit his/her/their work according to the same modalities as in the first term.

Participation in the first examination opportunity is a condition for participating in the retake exam because process evaluation is an essential part of the evaluation.

The permanent evaluation (60%), consisting of the participation rate and process evaluation, cannot be retaken. The score for these components, obtained during the first examination opportunity, remains unchanged. Consequently, the retake exam counts for 40% of the total score.
